I am a licensed professional counselor in Oklahoma. I received a Bachelor of Science from Southern Nazarene University in Family Studies and Gerontology and a Masters of Human Relations with the emphasis of Licensed Professional Counseling from The University of Oklahoma. I have experience with adults, families, and groups. I have worked with those struggling with mild to severe mental illness as well as those individuals who are struggling with issues including depression, grief & loss, abuse/neglect, addictions with dual diagnosis, behavioral problems, bipolar, and parenting problems. I adapt my counseling style to each individual. However, within my experience, I have noticed that clients are more adaptable to me utilizing a counseling style of a client-focused approach. I believe that it is important to meet the client where they currently are in their journey of life and work from that point. I am a very transparent-honest-caring individual in my day to day life and I bring that trait to each session with the belief that in doing so, the client feels more at ease with being honest as issues and challenges are being processed. I believe everyone deserves respect and compassion as well as the opportunity to have added support when needed. My approach/style combines cognitive-behavioral and client-centered….just to name a few. A client’s treatment plan and the direction of the sessions will be tailored to meet the individual needs. "Whenever you find yourself doubting how far you can go, just remember how far you have come".

My background is fairly broad having lived in a number of states in the United States and abroad. I have a positive regard for many cultures having lived abroad as well, recognizing that diversity is a part of the world we live in now and our many cultures create a mosaic of life. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed in the state of Oklahoma and Colorado. I have a Masters degree in Counseling. My career has included work with families and youth, individuals and couples along with those struggling with serious mental health issues as well as leading organizations and dealing in this capacity with personnel and ways to lead staff and motivate leadership in these settings always striving for positive outcomes. I have had training in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Cognitive Processing Therapy, and have been a counselor for 20 plus years. I am typically eclectic when working with individuals and families, as well as couples and youth. It is my belief that you can use a socratic approach of questioning and exploring, and challenging gently when working with survivors of trauma, when exploring misconceptions, as well as challenging belief patterns that may be challenging to the day to day coping that we need to have. I believe that we can also explore our patterns of functioning and adapt adding new skills and patterns, traditions and celebrations for example, to place ourselves in a better place to thrive, not only survive in this experience we call life. We have the honor as counselors to travel with you and those you care about on your journey briefly, and this we do with the utmost respect for who you are and for how you wish to see yourself and your family and loved ones succeed and overcome the current challenges you are facing.

The information below is my introduction to you, to let you know a little more about me and how I approach counseling. Hi, my name is Jerry, I have over 30 years counseling experience in the mental health field, I specialize in working with adults who have problems with depression and anxiety and general everyday life concerns and PTSD. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Oklahoma. I believe that counseling is a process that helps you become the person you want to be, not by giving advice but by working together to help you solve your concerns. I also use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as my preferred choice of treatment. CBT for shorts offers a variety of tools that be can be used to speed up your progress. I usually recommend a book called "Understanding, subtitled, Finding Peace and Serenity in Life and Relationships, this is to help you better understand the principles of CBT If you would like to check this book out it can be found on Amazon.com, it is a very old book but a good book. Please let me know at anytime if you have any questions or concerns about this or anything else. FYI - Symptoms of depression include: feelings of sadness, tearfulness, emptiness or hopelessness, angry outbursts, irritability or frustration, even over small matters, loss of interest or pleasure in most or all normal activities, such as sex, hobbies or sports, sleep disturbances, including insomnia or sleeping too much, tiredness and lack of energy, so even small tasks take extra effort, reduced appetite and weight loss or increased cravings for food and weight gain, anxiety, agitation or restlessness, slowed thinking, speaking or body movements, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, fixating on past failures or self-blame, trouble thinking, concentrating, making decisions and remembering things, frequent or recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts or suicide. Symptoms of anxiety include: common anxiety signs and symptoms include: feeling nervous, restless or tense, having a sense of impending danger, panic or doom, having an increased heart rate, breathing rapidly, experiencing, having difficulty controlling worry, having the urge to avoid things that trigger anxiety. I also work with trauma victims who suffer from symptoms of PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Post-traumatic stress disorder is a mental health condition that's triggered by a terrifying event - either experiencing it or witnessing it. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares, and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event. Most people who go through traumatic events may have temporary difficulty adjusting and coping, but with time and good self-care, they usually get better. If the symptoms get worse, last for months or even years, and interfere with your day-to-day functioning, you may have PTSD. Symptoms can include all of the following: Symptoms of negative changes in thinking and mood may include: negative thoughts about yourself, other people or the world, hopelessness about the future. Memory problems, including not remembering important aspects of the traumatic event, difficulty maintaining close relationships, feeling detached from family and friend, lack of interest in activities you once enjoyed, difficulty experiencing positive emotions, feeling emotionally numb. Changes in physical and emotional reactions. Symptoms of changes in physical and emotional reactions (also called arousal symptoms) may include: being easily startled or frightened, always being on guard for danger, self-destructive behavior, such as drinking too much or driving too fast, trouble sleeping, trouble concentrating, irritability, angry outbursts or aggressive behavior and overwhelming guilt or shame. Getting effective treatment after PTSD symptoms develop can be critical to reduce symptoms and improve function. Symptoms can include, Avoidance Symptoms of avoidance may include: trying to avoid thinking or talking about the traumatic event, avoiding places, activities or people that remind you of the traumatic even. I use a thoroughly researched and proven method of therapy for PTSD that is called Written Exposure Therapy or WET for short. WET can be completed in as little as 5 sessions but may require more session for some people. If you have any of these symptoms and you want to get better faster, WET is one of the recommend treatment methods. I believe that it is a relationship between two people. It takes courage to seek a more happy and fulfilling life to take the first steps to change. Counseling is about making changes that you want to make. If you are interested in a person that cares about your needs, is respectful and will listen to your needs then I am the counselor that can help you. I look forward to meeting and working with you. I find some people like to chat, some like to do phone calls and some people like to do video sessions. In order to better understand your needs, could you please let me know how you would like to proceed. If you would like to schedule a session, please check my calendar and pick an available time slot that works for you, if nothing is available that works for you, let me know as I am flexible will do my best to meet your needs. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to meeting you soon. Some people like to start off with just chatting others feel more comfortable using the phone or video sessions. I just wanted to let you know, that I will never judge you and that I am here for your needs only, please let me know how I can assist you. When you do decide to take the next step, the following are instructions to help you have a better session. Here is some useful information. When you come online for your video or phone session and or chat, I will see you and initiate the call all you have to do is to accept it. Better help states that the videos and phone calls work best with Google Chrome, please do a video test before your session to make sure your video and microphone are working correctly. It should be in the help section. If you have any questions just send me a message. This is to ensure a problem free and productive session for you. FYI, chats can either be completed on your page, and I have 24 hours to respond to each message or you can actually schedule a chat session, just like you would a phone or video session. Other important information, one important piece of information about this website, I am required to respond to any of your messages within 24 hours, except for weekends and holiday, but as you can see I am also up early in the morning as that is when I tend to answer my messages. Sometimes if it is early and not busy I even answer messages on weekends and sometime on holidays. I also wanted to let you know that I do schedule some evening sessions, I schedule them Monday through Wednesday. I do not put them on my calendar as I want to save them for people who need them. I currently have open session on Monday through Wednesday at 5:30 and 6:30 EST. Please let me know if you need one of these early evening sessions. Please let me know also what kind of session you would like, either chat, phone of video and I will be happy to schedule it for you. Please let me know if you have any questions.

As a licensed therapist (Licensed Professional Counselor), I obtained my Master of Counseling from Oklahoma State University/Tulsa, Oklahoma. My practice includes adults. I also offer extensive knowledge with the aging population, and care givers. I have been accomplished in facilitating support groups for various populations and numerous diagnoses, as well as training and education of other professionals regarding many Behavioral Health concerns. Specialties I offer, and am experienced and well-trained in, are anxiety, depression, grief/loss, dementia/cognitive impairment, trauma, and stress-related disorders. Other areas of focus include sexuality, LGBTQ concerns, hoarding disorder, and other Behavioral Health concerns. Although I recognize that all clients are unique individuals and different theories work differently with everyone, I work to assess clients and gain an understanding of what type of therapy will be most successful. Primarily, I practice Person-Centered and Solution-Focused Therapy, and I also incorporate some Gestalt and Existential techniques. I start with an optimistic view of all clients, providing a positive, supportive, and comfortable atmosphere/conversation. I offer an empathic outlook, working to connect with you. I am hopeful my clients can feel autonomy, and I also ask, “what difference or change do you want to achieve”? I believe taking a look at your meaning in life can be insightful many times, too. I also offer mindfulness techniques when appropriate, as I do credit holistic approaches as important for us emotionally and physically. I prefer to work with adults aged 25 or older. Phone and video are astonishing ways to provide counseling sessions; however, I am not so keen on live chat. I do use the messaging for in between sessions, if there is something of importance you want to share or let me know. I will do the same! I hope to facilitate and support you through this process and towards your goal in seeking therapy.

I'm a therapist that focuses on techniques and strategies that work, and I see progress with my clients pretty quickly. I'm licensed in Oklahoma with 14 years of experience as a therapist and over 17 years of experience in mental health. I have experience in helping clients with executive functioning (ADHD and autism), stress and anxiety, queer/lgbtq+ issues, Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID/multiple personalities), & coping with life changes. I use many therapeutic models or perspectives, primarily focusing on how systemic and institutional barriers affect mental, emotional, and behavioral health and well-being. I'm queer-friendly. I strongly believe anyone and everyone can benefit from therapy. I do not use or believe in the "medical model" of mental health, so I do not attempt to "cure" "mental illness", but recognize that mental health is complicated and "mental illness" is mostly a survival response.

In today's fast-paced society, mental well-being has become a cornerstone of a fulfilling life. Amid the daily challenges and stressors that can overwhelm even the most resilient individuals, seeking professional guidance often offers a path to clarity and balance. The journey toward improved emotional health involves understanding personal triggers, embracing self-compassion, and developing effective coping strategies. While self-help books and online resources provide valuable information, nothing compares to the personalized support offered by a qualified mental health professional. One-on-one sessions with experienced experts can help uncover the underlying issues contributing to anxiety, depression, or other emotional hurdles. With a careful and empathetic approach, these professionals tailor their advice to suit individual needs, ensuring that each person receives strategies that work best for their unique circumstances. Whether through cognitive behavioral techniques, mindfulness practices, or other innovative methods, the aim is to foster resilience and empower individuals to take control of their inner lives. For those living in bustling urban centers, engaging in face-to-face sessions in a welcoming environment can be particularly beneficial. Access to a caring clinician provides not only a safe space to explore difficult emotions but also builds a support network essential for long-term recovery. The process encourages self-reflection and greater insight into behavioral patterns that might otherwise go unnoticed. While the journey can be challenging at times, the rewards include enhanced emotional stability, improved interpersonal relationships, and a renewed sense of self-worth. In one notable case, the guidance provided by a highly trained therapist proved instrumental in navigating a tumultuous period. Through structured sessions and tailored interventions, the individual learned to identify stressors and develop healthier responses to adversity. This experience underscored the transformative impact that dedicated support can have on one's overall quality of life. In a region like Texas, community-based initiatives and accessible mental health programs further reinforce the value of professional help. These efforts emphasize early intervention, preventive care, and continuous support, ensuring that more people are equipped to face life's inevitable challenges. Ultimately, investing in mental well-being is an act of self-care that yields lifelong benefits. By embracing professional support, individuals can unlock new levels of emotional resilience and discover pathways to a brighter, more balanced future. Each step taken toward healing represents a commitment to personal growth, enabling a life filled with renewed optimism and strength. Embracing this transformative journey consistently paves the way for deeper understanding, lasting peace, and meaningful personal progress.
